Vesicles are usually uniform in appearance in this form of herpetic infection.  Slight variability in shape may happen in some anatomical locations. This clinical feature of herpes simplex infection helps to differentiate it from shingles. Vesicles in shingles appear in various stages of development and are not homogeneous.
